Operas by Giacomo Puccini for rent in reduced orchestration

La Bohème$720

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, and strings.

Our La Bohème reduction requires one fewer wind instrument than the old McConathy reduction published by Kalmus, now withdrawn by them as being too full of problems (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental). The McConathy set is missing a conductor’s score and harp part, both of which we provide.

As an option, we can include inserts transposing Rodolfo’s Act I aria “Che gelida manina” down a half step for an extra $50.

We also have a large-format full score (not reduced) of La Bohème available for purchase, 9 x 12 inches, coil-bound, 2 volumes, 408 total pages, $145/set. (A reduced score is included with the rental of the reduction).

La Bohème: “Sì. Mi chiamano Mimì”$95

Reduction for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, and strings.

Excerpt from the above.

La Bohème: “Vecchia Zimarra”$95

Reduction for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, timpani, harp, and strings.

Excerpt from the above.

La Fanciulla del West$720

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, and strings.

We also have a large-format full score (not reduced) of La Fanciulla del West available for purchase, 10 x 13 inches, coil-bound, 2 volumes, 440 total pages, $145/set. (A reduced score is included with the rental of the reduction).

La Fanciulla del West is in the public domain in the United States but may still be under copyright protection in some countries, in which case in would be your responsibility to negotiate grand rights with the copyright holder. Motet Music Publishing does not assume any sort of legal responsibility or liability in renting the music to you.

Madama Butterfly$720

The “standard version,” Puccini’s final revision, from 1907.

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, viola d’amore (optional), and strings.

Our Butterfly reduction requires two fewer winds than the old Panizza reduction published by Kalmus (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion, including the banda, into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental); in the Panizza set the percussion is distributed among six(!) different parts.

The Panizza edition was hand-copied and contains many copyist errors. Where an instrument doesn’t play for a while, the copyists sometimes left out minutes worth of intervening rests, instead marking “Tacet until needed,” yet failing to provide adequate cues, which can lead to confusion and lost players.

Panizza’s trumpet parts were written for the extinct low F trumpet, requiring an error-prone transposition of a fourth or fifth for modern instruments, and containing notes too low for the C trumpet. Our trumpet part is written specifically for trumpet in C.

We also have a large-format full score (not reduced) of Madama Butterfly available for purchase, 9 x 12 inches, coil-bound, 2 volumes, 483 total pages, $145/set. (A reduced score is included with the rental of the reduction).

Madama Butterfly: “Un bel di vedremo”$95

Reduction for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, timpani & bass drum (both can be covered by one player), harp, and strings.

Excerpt from the above.

La Rondine$720

First version, from 1917.

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, keyboard (piano and celesta), and strings.

We also have available Ruggero’s Act I aria “Parigi!,” added for Puccini’s failed 1920 revision of the opera, for an extra $50. This includes measures before and after which incorporate it into the first edition. In addition to inserts for the orchestra parts and conductor’s score, we supply two copies of a piano-vocal score for the aria.

We also have a large-format full score (not reduced) of La Rondine available for purchase, 10 x 13 inches, coil-bound, 3 volumes, 422 total pages, $210/set. (A reduced score is included with the rental of the reduction). La Rondine was not published by Puccini’s usual publisher Casa Ricordi, but rather by a rival firm, Sonzongno; the only conductor’s score available is hand-written, lacks clefs and key signatures at the start of each system, and so is not up to our usual standards. The orchestra parts, however, are high-quality.

Tosca$720

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, organ & celesta, and strings.

Our Tosca reduction requires two fewer winds than the old McConathy reduction published by Kalmus (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion, including the banda, into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental). The McConathy set is missing a conductor’s score, and harp, organ, and celesta parts, all of which we provide.

For orchestras with small cello sections, we provide alternate versions of the Act III cello quartet, for three celli and a viola, or for 2 celli and two violas.

The church bells at the beginning of Act III are cued in the organ/celesta part as well as the percussion part, for possible performance on electronic keyboard, or an antiphonal combination of electronic keyboard and percussion tubular bells.

Tosca: “Vissi d’arte”$95

Reduction for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, timpani, harp, and strings.

Excerpt from the above.

Il Trittico: Gianni Schicchi$420

Reduction for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, celesta (optional), and strings.

Our Il Trittico reduction requires three fewer winds than the old Panizza reduction (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental).

Our Il Trittico was conducted by Maestro Lorin Maazel at the 2010 Castleton Festival. Watch: YouTube clip of Gianni Schicchi from the Castleton Festival using our reduction.

We also have a large-format full score (not reduced) of Gianni Schicchi available for purchase, 10 x 13 inches, coil-bound, 157 pages, $75. (A reduced score is included with the rental of the reduction).

Gianni Schicchi is in the public domain in the United States but may still be under copyright protection in some countries, in which case in would be your responsibility to negotiate grand rights with the copyright holder.

Watch: YouTube clip of the finale of Suor Angelica from the Castleton Festival, and “Senza Mama” from the same production.

As an option, we can include inserts for Angelica’s aria “Amici fiori” from the original version of Suor Angelica, later cut by Puccini, for an additional $50. Also includes a piano-vocal score of the aria for rehearsal. Listen to a YouTube clip of “Amici fiori” sung by Violeta Urmana, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alberto Veronesi (full orchestration, not our reduction).
