Operas by Giacomo Puccini for rent in reduced orchestration

La Bohème$600

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, and strings.

Our La Bohème reduction requires one fewer wind instrument than the old McConathy reduction published by Kalmus, now withdrawn by them as being too full of problems (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental). The McConathy set is missing a conductor’s score and harp part, both of which we provide.

As an option, we can supply at no additional charge Rodolfo’s Act I aria “Che gelida manina” transposed down a half step. Let us know when you order if you want this.

La Bohème: “Sì. Mi chiamano Mimì”$80

Madama Butterfly$600

Reduction for 1 flute (doubles on piccolo), 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 bass trombone, timpani & percussion (combined part—1 or more players), harp, viola d’amore (optional), and strings.

This is the “standard version,” Pucccini’s final revision, from 1907.

Our Butterfly reduction requires two fewer winds than the old Panizza reduction published by Kalmus (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion, including the banda, into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental); in the Panizza set the percussion is distributed among six(!) different parts.

The Panizza edition was hand-copied and contains many copyist errors. Where an instrument doesn’t play for a while, the copyists sometimes left out minutes worth of intervening rests, instead marking “Tacet until needed,” yet failing to provide adequate cues, which can lead to confusion and lost players.

Panizza’s trumpet parts were written for the extinct low F trumpet, requiring an error-prone transposition of a fourth or fifth for modern instruments, and containing notes too low for the C trumpet. Our trumpet part is written specifically for trumpet in C.

Our Tosca reduction requires two fewer winds than the old McConathy reduction published by Kalmus (a reduction in orchestra size by one musician will typically more than pay for the rental). In addition, we incorporate timpani and all of the percussion, including the banda, into a single part for one or more players (multiple copies are provided with the rental). The McConathy set is missing a conductor’s score, and harp, organ, and celesta parts, all of which we provide.

For orchestras with small cello sections, we provide alternate versions of the Act III cello quartet, for three celli and a viola, or for 2 celli and two violas.

The church bells at the beginning of Act III are cued in the organ/celesta part as well as the percussion part, for possible performance on electronic keyboard, or an antiphonal combination of electronic keyboard and percussion tubular bells.
